Protein- A Nutritional Powerhouse

from:

Protein has always played an important role in good nutrition. Popularly referred to as the building blocks of the human body, protein is responsible for important tasks like building up muscle and repairing damages. Having an insufficient amount of protein in your diet can lead to reduced energy levels and productivity, low stamina and slow recovery if a part of the body is hurt or damaged.

Most of us are familiar with the fact that bodybuilders consume a large amount of protein and often take protein shakes to build more muscle mass. Ordinary people need to have a large amount of protein in their diets as well. Proteins play a key role in keeping the human body healthy and strong- without the right amount of protein, the body can never perform at its optimum ability.

Powerful Stuff

To get a clearer picture of the importance of protein in good nutrition, it is important to understand many tasks that protein does inside the body. Protein is needed to develop the structural aspects of human body, like fingernails, muscles, bones and skin. They are also needed to help in vital processes like blood clotting, transporting material through cell membranes, activating enzymes and maintaining a balance in the pH level.

With so many varied and important tasks to perform, it is little wonder that protein is needed in such vast quantities. While the majority of the human body is in fact water, almost 50% of it is protein. A diet based in good nutrition will consist of generous amounts of protein in a number of forms.

What About Vegetarians?

Years ago, it was thought that meat was mandatory for good nutrition and a balanced diet. Without meat, there seemed to be no other way to get the necessary protein needed for good health and vegetarian diets were regarded as incomplete and lacking in important elements. Nowadays however, nutritionists and health experts agree that it is possible to get more than enough protein without eating meat. However, vegetarians do need to take extra care to ensure that they get the right amount of protein in their diet.

While meat is known to be a good source of protein, there are a number of vegetarian foods that are good sources of protein as well. Soy has a very high level of protein and is ideal for vegans. Eggs and milk also contain generous amounts of protein as do legumes, beans and nuts.

Whether you are a vegetarian or a non-vegetarian, generous amounts of protein are needed for complete and high-quality nutrition. By ensuring that your diet contains the necessary amounts of protein, you can be confident that your diet is based in good nutrition and will take you on the path to good health. For those who are unsure about whether they are meeting their protein requirements, a meeting with a nutritionist or doctor may prove to be helpful.
