from: Glyconutrients - The Sweet Part Of You

People who have always avoided sweets in their fitness mantra don’t know that Glyconutrients, the essential part of every cell in the body, is sweet in nature. Glyconutrients are composed of sugar or monosaccharide, and that is why it is known as the “Sweet Nutrient”. Glycoprotein comprises of sugar and protein. (Sugars + Proteins = Glycoprotein).

There are eight “essential Glyconutrients”. They are essential because we get them from our daily food intake and they are not produced within our body. Their primary function is cellular communication and they deliver cellular messages throughout the body. Five crucial Glyconutrients that can be found in Fucoidan are Mannose, Glucose, Galactose, Xylose and Fucose.

Role of Glyconutrients:

Besides balancing, strengthening and maintaining the immune system, Glyconutrients have a unique property of modulating the immune system. That is, they play a role in auto-immune diseases and chronic or recurring infections. Glyconutrients also keep the defense mechanism of our body in shape, and ready to fight off any attack on our body.

How they work?

On cell surfaces Glycoproteins enable "cellular communication" by which cells "talk" to one another and identify invaders (bacteria, viruses, and allergens).

Glycoprotein and Balanced diet:

Human Glycoprotein and Glycolipids contain sugars like Galactose, Glucose, Mannose, N-acetylneuraminic acid (sialic acid), Fucose, N-acetylgalactosamine, N-acetylglucosamine, and Xylose. These eight types play a very vital role in healthy functioning of all cells in the human body. There are around 200 types of sugar found in nature. Of these, Glucose and Galactose form a common part of American diets (main sources are table sugar and dairy products). Consumption of the rest of the sugar types is comparatively rarer due to the lack of consumption of fresh vegetables and fruit. Depleted soils and early agricultural harvesting is also to blame. These processes restrict Glyconutrients in our food.

A Bright Future Ahead:

The "Human Genome Project of Cell Signaling" was signed in 2000 among five research laboratories in the United States for additional research in cellular communication. The researchers will try to understand the molecular mechanism of cellular communication and its response to the environment. This project is supported and funded by the US government, which has invested $50 million in the project. Glycoprotein research has also managed to grab the attention of many drug companies and new drugs are tested based on cell-surface sugars.

Researchers believe that Glyconutrition:

•Considerably increases natural killer cell and macrophage count.

•Activates T-cell activity only when required.

•Decreases cell death in chronic fatigue syndrome.

•Acts as antioxidant compounds & slows premature aging

•Works on anti-inflammatory in diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.

•Initiates the right reaction by enabling the cellular component to stick together.

Today, the importance of Glycoprotein is being recognized everywhere around the world. People have started realizing the fact that like vitamins and minerals, Glycoproteins also form an important part of our balanced diet and should not be avoided.
